Meet Virginia Allen…

Virginia Allen is the curator of the extensive Otto-Werner Mueller Collection, which includes his marked scores and edited parts. She is also researching his life and work and plans to write a book about him. She was married to Mueller from 2003 until his death in 2016.

Home-based in Philadelphia, Virginia is a conductor, music educator, arranger, and consultant. An adjunct faculty member at The Juilliard School, she also served there as the Associate Dean for Administration, the Assistant Dean for Orchestral Studies, and the founding Artistic Director of the Conducting Workshop for Music Educators. Additionally, Virginia taught conducting at The Curtis Institute of Music and University of the Arts in Philadelphia and at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. 

Prior to her career in higher education, Virginia enjoyed a 20-year career as a conductor and administrator in the U.S. Army Bands Program. A pioneer for women in military bands, she was the first woman conductor of The U.S. Army Field Band and The Soldiers’ Chorus in Washington, D.C., The West Point Band, The U.S. Army Forces Command Band in Atlanta, and the West Point Glee Club.  She is Artistic Director Emerita of the Philadelphia Wind Symphony which she founded.
